Chemistry

The Chemistry Program curriculum at Cuyamaca College is designed to provide students who choose to work toward a bachelor’s degree in the subject a well-balanced, lower-division experience with a strong emphasis on fundamentals and problem solving. Earning an associate science degree at Cuyamaca College fulfills the lower-division requirements (except for analytical chemistry) for chemistry majors at most four-year colleges and universities.

What will you learn? Students who complete the program will be able to:

  • Comprehend and describe the nature of matter, including its classification, composition and structure
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the transformations of matter, both physical and chemical
  • Develop critical thinking skills by predicting interactions between different types of matter, both physical and chemical; analyze matter in the laboratory both qualitatively and quantitatively; perform mathematical calculations related to the transformation and analysis of matter.

Courses in chemistry include Chemistry and Crime, which covers the elementary principles of chemistry and their application to the field of forensic chemistry; Forensic Chemistry, which covers the elementary principles of chemistry to the field of forensic science; General Chemistry; and Organic Chemistry.
